Martyr means Shaheed (शहीद) in Hindi. It is pronounced as Martǝr or मार्टर. A martyr is someone who is a victim or killed or made to suffer considerably because of their religious or political faith or principles.

What is Martyrs Day?

Martyr day is organised to honour those who lost their lives protecting the sovereignty or freedom of the nation. On Martyr’s day the president, vice president, prime minister, defense minister, and three Service Chiefs assemble at the memorial of Raj Ghat and lay flowers. The Armed forces blow clarions. A two minute silence in the memory of Indian martyrs is observed across the nation at 11am.

Why Martyr Day is observed on 30 January in India?

The government of India has chosen 30th January as Martyrs Day because it is the anniversary of the assassination of our father of nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948 by Nathuram Godse.

In India, 30th January is associated with Martyrs Day nationwide. But there are some other days too that are remembered as Martyrs day. These are-

  • 23rd March is the death anniversary of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru.
  • 19th May is Language Martyrs Day (Bhasha Shaheed Diwas) mainly observed in Assam.
  • 21st October is Police Martyrs Day observed by police departments nationwide.
  • 17th November is death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai, mainly observed in Odisha.
  • 19th November is the birthday of Rani Lakshmibai to honour those who gave their lives in the rebellion of 1857.
